Dr. B. V. Babu

An acknowledged researcher and renowned academician, Dr B V Babu (Born on 15th February 1961) has 36 years of teaching, research, consultancy, and administrative experience (as in 2021). He did his PhD from IIT Bombay. He is currently Self-Employed as Consultant on Quality Assurance in Higher Education and a W orld Bank Sponsored Project HEQEP (Higher Education Quality Enhancement Program) since 2017. Earlier, he was the Vice Chancellor of Graphic Era University-Dehradun (2016-17), Vice Chancellor of Galgotias University-Greater Noida (2014-16), Pro Vice Chancellor of DIT University-Dehradun (2013-14) and founding Director of Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) at JK Lakshmipat University-Jaipur (2011-2013).

Prior to that, Dr Babu served at BITS Pilani for 15 years (1996-2011), and held various administrative positions as Dean-Student Welfare Division, Dean-Faculty Division 1, Dean-Educational Hardware Division and Head-Chemical Engineering Department, to name a few. Before that he worked at Gujarat University for 11 years (1985-1996). 

Professor Babu is a distinguished academician and an acknowledged researcher with an h-index of 43 & i10-index of 118 and over 17,329 citations (as in April 2021). He is well known, internationally, for his algorithm, MODE (Multi Objective Differential Evolution) and its improved variants. Besides several highly-cited publications in International journals, he also has three well-accepted textbooks (published by Springer, Germany; Apple Academic Press, USA; and Oxford University Press, India) to his credit. He has wide ranging research interests in the areas of Evolutionary Computation (population-based nature-inspired search algorithms for the optimization of complex engineering problems for both single- and multi-objective formulations), Energy Engineering (biomass gasification, pyrolysis, energy integration analysis and process intensification) and Environmental Engineering (low cost adsorbents for

removing heavy metals and bio-filtration for removing volatile organic compounds). He supervised 10 PhD candidates and currently guiding 2 PhD candidates. He is PhD Examiner for 21 students & MTech Thesis Examiner for 13 students of IITs, NITs and Universities.

He has industrial exposure through Practice School Operations (PS-1 & PS-2) and Work ntegrated Learning Programs (WILP) of BITS-Pilani. He also was the Program Coordinator for (1) Process Engineering Programs offered for Chambal Fertilisers & Chemicals Limited (CFCL), Kota; (2) Process Engineering Programs offered for Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), Udaipur; (3) Power Engineering Programs offered for National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) at their various locations throughout India; (4) Manufacturing Engineering Programs offered for Bharat Forge Limited, Pune; (5) Marine Engineering & Nautical Sciences Programs offered at Tolani Maritime

Institute (TMI), Induri; (6) Marine Engineering Programs offered at RL Institute of Nautical Sciences, Madurai by BITS Pilani. In addition he has taken up industrial consultancy projects for PS Milk Processors, Ahmedabad; Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), Mumbai; Jalal Group of Complex Chemical Industries, Bahrain; Sangam (India) Limited Textile Industries, Bhilwara.

He is a member of various national and international academic and administrative committees. He is a Member, FICCI Higher Education Committee, New Delhi; Member, EPSI Committee of Deemed Universities, New Delhi; National Executive Council Member, Centre for Education Growth and Research (CEGR), New Delhi. He was the Chairman-Diploma Board, Member of National Council and also an Executive Member of Indian Society for Training and Development (ISTD), New Delhi. He is the Peer Team Member of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), a statutory body of UGC, New Delhi and served as Chairman, Member Coordinator and Member of various

visiting Peer Teams for many Universities and Institutions across the country. He is also member of Peer Review Committee for The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Canada; National Research Foundation (NRF), International Research Grants, South Africa; Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, New Delhi; and member of Research Project Review Committee, Ministry of Steel, Government of India, New Delhi. He is Peer Team Member (Overseas QA Expert) for Review of Self-Assessment Reports of various Universities of Bangladesh, appointed by University Grants Commission (UGC), Government of Bangladesh (GoB)

through World Bank Sponsored HEQEP (Higher Education Quality Enhancement Programme) Project. He is also a Peer Team Member for Arogya World India Trust for Healthy Workplace Assessment. He is Honorary Board Advisor and on Advisory Boards for many Educational Endeavors and Consulting Firms. He is Academic Expert Member of Academic Audit at VNIT Nagpur. He is External Expert Member of Board of Studies at Banasthali University, MNIT Jaipur and VNIT Nagpur. He is an Invited Panelist for AICTE-NCC-IP (All India Committee for Technical Education-National Coordination Committee-Induction Programme) Workshops on UHV (Universal Human Values).

Dr Babu got listed in his discipline with a Ranking of 302 out of 55,687 researchers across the World (Ranking 15th in India), with 81 publications during 1999-2017 in the same list of Top 2% Scientists in the World (Ref: Most coveted list of “World Ranking of Top 2% Scientists; Full List: http://shorturl.at/qHIJ4; Subject-wise List: http://shorturl.at/ bdix8). He is the recipient of CSIR's ‘National Technology Day Award’, obtained in recognition of the research work done. He received ‘Kuloor Memorial Award-2006’ awarded for the Best Technical Paper published in the Institute’s Journal “Indian Chemical Engineer” in its issues for 2005. He also received ‘MTC Global Award for Excellence -2015’ and felicitation for being one of the ‘Top 10 Thinkers-2015- Indian Ranking’. He is also the recipient of ‘Best Paper Awards’ in CHEMCON-2000 and CHEMCON-2001 for the papers he presented at the International Symposia & Annual Sessions of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE). He is the Life Member/ Fellow of many professional bodies such as IIChE, IE (I), ISTE, ICCE, IEA, SOM, ISSMO, IIIS, IAENG, SPE, ISTD, etc. He is Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board Member of several International and National Scientific Journals.

Overall he has over 240 research publications to his credit. He completed three consultancy projects successfully. He has published ten books and has written several chapters, invited editorials and articles in various books, lecture notes and international journals. He organized several International and National Conferences, Workshops & Seminars and also chaired several Technical Sessions. He has been Invited Speaker and delivered Keynote Addresses at various International Conferences, Seminars and Workshops. He has been invited Panelist in Panel Discussions on Higher Education at various National and International Summits, Conferences and Award Functions.

He visited various countries across the world including USA, UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Mexico, Malaysia, Dubai, Bahrain, Bangladesh, etc.

On Personal front, Dr Babu’s Father Late Sri Venkata Ramana (1937-2015) was a Businessman and Mother Late Smt Annapurna (1942-2018) was a Homemaker. Dr Babu has Two Sisters (One Elder and One Younger to him) and Two Brothers (Both Younger to him). Dr Babu got married in 1985 to Ms Shailaja (Born in 1963), who did her M.Sc. (Food & Nutrition) from Ravi Shankar University, Raipur. She worked as Lecturer in a Government Degree College during the initial years of her professional career, but later decided to be a Homemaker. Dr Babu and Ms Shailaja are blessed with two children. Daughter Shruti (Born in 1987) did her MS in Software Engineering and works

for Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) at Chennai, India as a Senior Software Engineer. Son Abhinav (Born in 1991) did his Dual Degree from BITS Pilani and works for LinkedIn at Sunnyvale, CA, USA as Senior Software Engineer. Daughter Shruti got married in 2015 to Prabhu Kiran (Born in 1986 and did his B.Tech from IIT-Madras and PGDM from IIM-Indore), who works for US Technologies Global (USTG) at their Chennai Office as Senior Manager and they are blessed with two sons namely Vivaan (Born in 2017) and Rihansh (Born in 2019). Son Abhinav got married in 2020 to Anushka (Born in 1996 and did her B.Tech from NIT, Kurukshetra and MS in Data Analytics from Texas A&M University, College Station, Houston, TX, USA), who works for Hewlett Packard (HP) at Houston, TX, USA as Data Analyst.

Dr Babu’s hobbies include singing, music compositions, playing keyboard, reading spiritual books, walking, and practicing Yoga and Pranayama.
